Chambers awaits decision on future

LONDON, England -- European 100 meters champion Dwain Chambers, who tested positive for new designer steroid THG last year, will learn his fate next week.

Britain's disgraced sprinter, who could be banned for two years, completed his defense at a disciplinary hearing in London on Thursday in 90 minutes.

The case against Chambers, put by national governing body UK Athletics, had earlier lasted around four hours after four expert witnesses were called before an independent panel.

Chambers was suspended from competition in November following his positive test for the steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG).

The UK Athletics witnesses were Larry Bowers, a scientist from the U.S. anti-doping agency, Don Catlin, director of the Californian laboratory which discovered the existence of THG, and two other scientists.

Chambers made no comment when he arrived at the hearing but repeatedly appeared at the windows of the London law firm's chambers where it was being held, grinning and holding his thumbs up.

The three-strong independent committee comprised a laywer, an athlete and scientist.

Chambers, 25, had tested positive for the newly discovered steroid in early August. He has denied knowingly taking the drug.

If found guilty by the panel, appointed by U.K Athletics, Chambers will face a mandatory two-year suspension and a lifetime ban from the Olympics.

He would have 60 days to appeal the case to the Court of Arbitration in Sport.

The sport's world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations, could also challenge the decision if it did not agree with it.
