Gilchrist fined half his match fee
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Australia vice-captain Adam Gilchrist was fined half his match fee for dissent on Tuesday for showing dissent in a one-day game against Sri Lanka.
All-rounder Andrew Symonds also went before the inquiry in Colombo, but was cleared of the charge.
Match referee Mike Proctor summoned the two after they questioned Sri Lankan umpire Peter Manuel's decision to rule Symonds out leg before wicket in Sunday's match at Dambulla.
Manuel called Symonds back after consulting with the second umpire, but Sri Lanka went on to win the game by one run and tie the series 1-1.
"I had some difficult decisions to make," Proctor told a news conference after a one-hour hearing with the players.
He added: "I feel sorry for Adam because he is a very fair cricketer but I took everything into consideration, including the fact that this was his third offence.
"Andrew Symonds was found not guilty as there is a very fine line between disappointment and dissent. I have said before that I do not expect players to be robots."
The players were batting together in the 41st over of the Australian innings on Sunday when the incident occurred.
Manuel later reported Gilchrist and Symonds to the match referee for breaches of the ICC's code of conduct for displays of dissent.
