Zberg claims lead after sprint win

Story Tools

EMPURIABRAVA, Spain -- Gerolsteiner's Beat Zberg dominated a sprint finish to win stage two of the Catalan cycling week.

Zberg held off Belgian Frank Vandenbroucke after the 160.8km ride from Lloret de Mar, to take the leader's jersey from Swiss compatriot Fabian Cancellara, who finished sixth.

The second stage, which Zberg also won last year, was beset by fierce winds, prompting largely careful riding throughout the day -- although a number of crashes did occur.

Two Spanish riders, Luis Perez and Rafael Casero, were among the numerous victims of crashes and both have suspected broken collar bones.

The first breakaway of the day was initiated by Spaniard Gonzalo Bayarri, who attacked after 36km only to be pulled back after having built a four-minute lead.

Wednesday's third stage is held over 159.5km between Castello de Empuries and Montcada i Reixac.
