GENEVA, Switzerland -- The Olympic flame arrived in Switzerland on a relay which was due to take the torch to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the first time in 56 years.
Swiss tennis star Marc Rosset carried the torch into the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva through an alleyway lined with the flags of the UN's 191 member states and cheering UN staff.
The flame was welcomed by officials and celebrities, including Greek singer Nana Mouskouri.
She had criticized the delays in preparations for the 2004 Athens Olympics this August, in a newspaper interview on Thursday.
"I am worried about the delays for the Games. There is no possible excuse. It's too easy for the Greeks to say it's not their fault," Mouskouri told 24 Heures.
"I'm saying it openly, Greece has an immense responsibility to the whole world. For me responsibility and discipline are important," she added.
Mouskouri has been a Swiss resident for about 30 years.
The Olympic flame was later due to head for Lausanne, where IOC president Jacques Rogge -- a former Olympic yachtsman -- will carry the torch on a leg of the relay.
The flame has not passed through Lausanne since the relay leading to the 1948 London Olympic Games.
