Fans pour in for Sunday action

Play started on schedule at Wimbledon under broken sunshine at the All England Club.

It is only the third time in the tournament's history that play has been necessary on the middle Sunday, normally a rest day. Persistent rain completely wiped out play on Wednesday and Saturday in the first week.

Tickets were sold on a first-come, first-served basis, as they were in 1991 and 1997.

Center Court was packed to the rafters with a lively crowd indulging in Mexican waves in anticipation of the first match between men's defending champion Roger Federer and Swede Thomas Johansson.

British hope Tim Henman was next on Center Court against Hicham Arazi of Morocco, followed by women's defending champion Serena Williams against Magui Serna of Spain.

Organizers hope to complete all 22 outstanding matches in the men's and women's singles third round in order to play the fourth round as scheduled on Monday.
