LYON, France -- Former French international rugby captain Marc Cecillon has been taken into police custody after shooting his wife dead.
The 45-year-old shot his wife several times in front of 60 witnesses at a party in Bourgoin-Jallieu. He was subsequently restrained by the guests and handed over to the local police.
Cecillon played 46 times for France and led the side five times.
He played for Bourgoin for 23 years before retiring in 1999.
According to police Cecillon was drunk at the time of the shooting and did not realize his wife was dead until he awoke on Sunday morning.
Cecillon, who had returned to Bourgoin to be their general manager, and his wife had grown apart over several years and the tragedy occurred after their latest row.
A rampaging forward best known as a flanker, Cecillon played for France from 1988-95.
His biography by Guy Leduc was titled: "Marc Cecillon: L'homme tranqille de Rugby Francais" ("The quiet man of French Rugby").
