SHANGHAI, China -- Former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero has pulled out of this week's Heineken Open in Shanghai citing wrist and knee injuries.
Doctors recommended rest for the world No. 11 after he was injured in a hard-fought Davis Cup match on Friday against France's Fabrice Santoro.
Ferrero defeated Santoro 6-3 6-1 1-6 6-3 but pulled out of his Sunday Davis Cup match after failing to recover.
It would have been Ferrero's second trip to China this month.
The Spaniard lost to American Kevin Kim in the second round of the China Open in Beijing on September 16.
"Today's news leaves us with regret, but injury is a misfortune tennis players frequently face," Heineken Open director Lu Huayong said.
Ferrero has won 11 career titles, but is still chasing his first win of 2004 amid recurring injury woes.
Ferrero had been the top seed at the $380,000 (3.5 million yuan) tournament at the Xian Xia Tennis Center.
This year's event also features last year's champion, Mark Philippoussis of Australia, Czech Jiri Novak, and Guillermo Canas of Argentina. Philippoussis defeated Novak last year to end a two-year title drought.
