Mauresmo loses her spot if Davenport reaches the Moscow last eight

METZ, France -- Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from the Kremlin Cup because of a leg injury and could lose her world number one ranking to Lindsay Davenport this week.

""Amelie slightly pulled a left thigh muscle. She will have to rest for three days so she is not going to Moscow," said her coach Loic Courteau.

"We shall decide at the end of the week if she enters the Zurich grand prix next week," she added.

Mauresmo, who has headed the WTA rankings since the U.S. Open, sustained the injury on Sunday while playing Davenport in the final of the Filderstadt grand prix. She retired after losing the first set 6-2.

The American is now 15 points adrift of the French world number one and will supersede her if she reaches the quarter-finals in Moscow.

Novak absent

Meanwhile, Czech Jiri Novak, who injured a rib in doubles on Sunday shortly after winning the singles title at the Japan Open, has withdrawn from the CA Trophy in Vienna.

The seventh seed defeated American Taylor Dent in a three-set comeback to win the Tokyo title, but was forced to quit trailing 5-1 in the ensuing doubles final.

Novak and fellow Czech Petr Pala went out to the second-seeds Jared Palmer and Pavel Vizner.

Novak was replaced in the Vienna draw by lucky loser Glenn Weiner. Tokyo finalist Dent is due to play in Vienna, opening against an Austrian wild card entry.
