Williams wins his world title chance after his stunning defeat of Tyson

LONDON, England -- World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will make the first defense of his WBC title against Britain's Danny Williams in New York on December 11, it was announced on Thursday.

Williams gets his chance after beating Mike Tyson in July and the venue is expected to be confirmed as Madison Square Garden once final contracts for the fight are signed next week.

The 31-year-old British boxer insisted he would seize his chance to follow up his stunning knockout of Tyson.

"I am grateful for the opportunity and I know I am fighting one of the best heavyweights in the world but I am determined to bring the world title back to Britain," he said.

"This is a totally different fight than Tyson and for this I need to come in lighter and sharper.

"I didn't think I would get the opportunity so quickly but I used the Tyson fight as my springboard and now I am here I am going to make the most of it."

Klitschko insisted Williams was always the likely opponent for his first title defense after destroying his own dream of a fight with Tyson.

The Ukrainian said: "I wanted Williams because he destroyed my dream of fighting Mike. I was very close to doing that and I was disappointed, but I was also surprised and impressed with Williams' performance."

Klitschko, who boasts a 34-2 record with 33 knockouts, is widely recognised as the best heavyweight in the division following the retirement of Lennox Lewis.

The 33-year-old won the vacant WBC title in April this year - his second attempt following a controversial loss to Lewis - with an eighth round stoppage of Corrie Sanders.

Williams' record reads 33-2 with 26 KOs.
