Woods, Montgomerie tie for lead
THOUSAND OAKS, California -- Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomerie shared a two-shot lead after the second round of golf's World Challenge in California.
The pair both scored five-under-par 66s at the Sherwood Country Club to stay at the top of the leaderboard at nine-under 133 for the tournament.
Woods, who hosts the invitational event, posted six birdies and one bogey, including five birdies in a six-hole stretch in the middle of the round.
But the 28-year-old admitted he was disappointed to manage just one birdie across the four par-five holes.
"I just didn't play the par-fives particularly well today," said Woods.
"I left a few shots out there but overall I'm very pleased with the way I hit the golf ball and especially the way I putted."
Briton Montgomerie made five birdies in his first seven holes but then had to scramble for a bogey at the 18th to maintain a share of the lead with his playing partner.
"The back nine is more tricky, but at the same time I feel you can score on the back nine as well," said Montgomerie.
"It's different to play with Tiger. I've just got to concentrate on my own game, that's all you do.
"I'm not going to beat Tiger. I'm not going to outdrive him, I'm not going to hit better iron shots and I'm not going to chip the ball better and I'm not going to putt better. The only way I'm going to beat Tiger is by scoring well."
Jim Furyk, who had also shared the first round lead, dropped back with a 68. Jay Haas joined him in joint third place with a 66.
Chris DiMarco (67) and Davis Love (66) are three shots back while world number one Vijay Singh is 10 shots off the pace, tying for 15th place in the 16-man field.
