Stankovic completes Inter transfer
ROME, Italy -- Serbian international midfielder Dejan Stankovic has joined Inter Milan from Serie A rivals Lazio -- just before the close of the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for a fee in the region of four million euros.
Stankovic's future at Lazio had been in doubt since talks over a new contract broke down. His contract expired in June and the cash-strapped club hoped to sell during the transfer window rather than lose one of its top players for nothing.
"At Inter at last!" were Stankovic's first words, after donning the blue-and-black-striped number 11 Inter shirt.
"I have to thank Lazio who saw me grow up as a player and as a man. But a new adventure begins for me now at a great club and with a great team."
Stankovic added that he had waived part of his signing-off fee so that Lazio would gain some compensation for his early departure from Rome.
He could make his debut for Inter on Sunday against Siena. Inter go into the weekend joint fourth in the Serie A standings, level with crisis-hit Parma and Lazio on 32 points.
