Smith puts Sunderland in quarters

Story Tools

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Sunderland upset Premier League Birmingham 2-1 in extra time to advance to the FA Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 12 years.

Tommy Smith scored in the 99th and 115th minutes of the fifth round replay at St. Andrew's, after the game had finished 0-0 in normal time.

Sunderland, relegated to the First Division last season, will now host fellow Division One side Sheffield United in the last eight.

Substitute Smith scored his first with five minutes remaining of the first period of extra time. The initial shot from Kevin Kyle crashed against the crossbar and after a scramble Smith scored from the rebound.

With five minutes left of extra time, Smith found himself completely unmarked and had time to slip the ball wide of the exposed Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor into the corner of the net.
