Micoud back but Anelka is snubbed
PARIS, France -- Werder Bremen talisman Johan Micoud has been rewarded for his fine displays this season by being recalled to the French squad for their friendly against the Netherlands next week.
But there is no place for Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka, despite his public apology to coach Jacques Santini.
Micoud has scored nine goals in 25 matches for runaway Bundesliga leaders Bremen.
He has not been picked since he came off the bench as a late substitute during France's 2-0 defeat by Denmark at the 2002 World Cup.
"Johan's performances have been followed by our staff. We know he is a leader in his team," Santini told a news conference on Thursday.
"He is a playmaker and he will have the opportunity to show with France what he does so well with his club."
Santini indicated he was keeping his options open less than three months before the start of the Euro 2004 finals and that included Anelka.
Without stating outright that he has forgiven him, Santini said that the fiery player "is available for selection."
But while Anelka has scored 21 goals in the England this term, Santini called up Lyon's Peguy Luyindula for the Dutch match.
Manchester United striker Louis Saha was left out of the squad through injury as well as Sochaux midfielder Benoit Pedretti.
Santani welcomed back strikers David Trezeguet and Thierry Henry who missed France's 2-0 victory over Belgium in January, as well as Monaco playmaker Ludovic Giuly who has recently returned after a foot injury.
Santini has to announce his 23-man squad at least 10 days before the start of the finals on June 12 in Portugal.
France play only Brazil on May 20 for FIFA's centenary match before they start a training camp leading up to the defence of their title.
