Moenchengladbach fall to amateurs

HAMBURG, Germany -- Former German Cup winners Borussia Moenchengladbach became the second first division club to go out of the German Cup to lower league opponents when they were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich Amateurs.

The Munich side took the tie 7-6 in the shootout after the teams finished level at 1-1.

Bundesliga club Wolfsburg are also in danger of going out despite beating Cologne's reserve XI 3-0, because they included a suspended player.

Former Moenchengladbach player Daniel Jungwirth converted a penalty to put Bayern's amateurs ahead in the 34th minute after Jeff Strasser was adjudged to have fouled Borut Semler.

Joris van Hout equalized for the Bundesliga club four minutes from time to send the game into extra time and Moenchengladbach captain Christian Ziege was sent off five minutes into the extra period.

The penalty shoot-out was a nail-biting affair during which Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Darius Kampa saved two penalties, only for two of his team mates miss.

Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing became the hero when he saved Moenchengladbach's ninth spot kick from Enrico Gaede.

On Saturday top flight Hamburg crashed out 4-2 away to Paderborn.

Wolfsburg won at Cologne with a goal by Diego Klimowicz and a Thomas Brdaric brace, but the home side protested that Marian Hristov was still suspended for cup games.

Hristov, who joined Wolfsburg from Kaiserslautern at the beginning of the season, had been sent off in the 2003 cup final and suspended for three games.

Last season Kaiserslautern played only one game in the cup and Hristov was therefore still suspended for two matches.

Wolfsburg mistake

Wolfsburg manager Peter Pander said that the club accepted that they had made a mistake. "It is my fault and I think that Cologne will advance at our expense."

Hertha Berlin and 1860 Munich left it late, but in the end did enough to advance to the second round after suffering a scare against lower-league opposition.

Munich came within a few minutes of suffering an embarrassment at fifth-tier club Germania Schoeneiche, for whom captain Ronny Huppert opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

Francis Kioyo equalized for Munich five minutes from the break, but they were then made to sweat until a minute from time before Paul Agostino spared them the blushes of having to go into extra time.

Hertha Berlin needed an 86th minute goal through Andreas Neuendorf to beat TSV Aindling 1-0.
