MONACO (Reuters) -- Monaco hammered 10-man Nova Gorica 6-0 in their third qualifying round return on Tuesday to sail through to the group stage of the Champions League 9-0 on aggregate.

"The players did what they had to do. It was very important for us from a sporting point of view, but also financially, to qualify," added Didier Deschamps, coach of last season's beaten finalists.

Monaco will be France's third representative in the Champions League.

Champions Olympique Lyon and Paris St Germain are automatic qualifiers.

On the half hour, midfielder Lucas Berbardi doubled the score when he blasted home from 16 metres and Nova Gorica were reduced to 10 men after right back Marko Suler was handed a second yellow card by referee Mike Riley in the 41st minute.

One minute later, Monaco fullback Hassan El Fakiri scored his side's third after a scramble in the goalmouth area.

Coach Deschamps opted to rest several key players, like Squillaci and Chevanton, but there were more goals to come.

Kallon, who scored twice at Nova Gorica, struck in the 47th minute before Pontus Farnerud,in the 67th, and Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, with a penalty in the 84th minute, completed the rout.

Liverpool scraped through to the Champions League group stage after a 1-0 home defeat to Graz AK in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie.

They led 2-0 from the first leg and looked in no real danger until Mario Tokic cracked in a superb strike off the underside of the bar on 55 minutes.

They increased the tempo after going behind but had no clear chances.

The home side handed 19-year-old midfielder Darren Potter a debut from the start and included Senegal international Salif Diao in place of Dietmar Hamann.

Liverpool last reached the Champions League group stage in 2002/03. New Spanish signings Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia were ineligible for Tuesday night's game.

Ivory Coast striker Aruna Dindane scored twice to spur Anderlecht to a 3-0 win over 10-man Benfica and a place in the group stage.

A 72nd-minute penalty converted by Serbia and Montenegro international Nenad Jestrovic rounded off the Belgian champions' win in the second leg of third qualifying round tie for a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The Portuguese side, who won the first leg 1-0 in Lisbon two weeks ago, had defender Argel sent off in the 71st minute for blocking a Jestrovic shot on the line, giving away the penalty.
