KIEV, Ukraine -- Dynamo Kiev have appointed Josef Sabo as their coach on a permanent basis, the Ukrainian champions have said.
"It has been almost a month since Sabo took over as coach and we are happy about our decision which proved to be the correct one," said a club statement.
"The new coach has worked out the reasons for the crisis which hit Dynamo, achieved an understanding with the players and led them back to winning ways."
Sabo's appointment comes less than a week before Dynamo travel to Italy to take on Roma in their Champions League Group B opener next Wednesday.
The former Dynamo striker was first appointed caretaker coach last month, replacing Alexei Mikhailichenko, who was sacked following a string of poor results.
Dynamo lost their first Ukrainian league match of the season to arch-rivals Shakhtar Donetsk before going down at home to Turkish side Trabzonspor 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round on August 10.
Former Soviet international Mikhailichenko was appointed in May 2002 after the death of long-time boss Valery Lobanovsky.
Sabo, 64, coached the national side from 1996-1999 when he was sacked for failing to take Ukraine to Euro 2000. He also coached Dynamo from 1993 to 1997.
