Serbia top group as Spain are held
BELGRADE, Serbia and Montenegro -- A 5-0 win over San Marino moved Serbia and Montenegro to the top of World Cup qualifying group five as Spain were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in Vilnius.
Inter Milan's Dejan Stankovic scored twice for the home side either side of the break in Belgrade after Savo Milosevic had started the rout with a freekick on 35 minutes.
Stankovic doubled the lead on the stroke of halftime with a superb inswinging shot from a quick throw in and then headed home at the near post from a corner on 50 minutes.
Ognjen Koroman made it four on 52 minutes with his first international goal, a thundering shot into the roof of the net, and Zvonimir Vukic completed the scoring with another freekick on 69 minutes.
Spain dominated possession in Lithuania but never looked capable of breaking down the stubborn home defense, despite finishing the match with five forwards on the pitch.
Dynamo Kiev striker Edgaras Cesnauskis had the best chance of the match when sloppy Spanish defending allowed him to go around goalkeeper Iker Casillas, but his goalbound shot was cleared by Carles Puyol.
Serbia and Montenegro top the group with seven points from four games, while Spain and Lithuania both have five from three matches.
