ROTTERDAM, Netherlands -- Dutch international Dirk Kuijt scored twice as Feyenoord Rotterdam beat Hearts 3-0 in a UEFA Cup Group A encounter.
Kuijt gave Feyenoord the lead with a header in the 21st minute, although teammate Karim Saidi appeared to be offside.
Feyenoord looked the better side for most of the game, and Hearts were missing Dutch-born striker Mark de Vries with a toe injury. His replacement, Kevin McKenna, scored an apparent equalizer 10 minutes after Kuijt's fortunate goal, but was ruled offside.
"We played the game really well," said coach Ruud Gullit. "And sometimes you need some luck with the referee calls. Like we had today."
In the second half the Scottish team played aggressively, and Feyenoord took advantage of the extra space to counter.
Belgian Bart Goor lobbed keeper Craig Gordon in the 58th minute for the second goal and Kuijt added his second with 10 minutes left.
In the other match in the group Matias Delgado came off the bench to score a late goal and salvage a 1-1 draw for FC Basel at Schalke.
Levan Kobiashvili scored in the eighth minute after Basel had lost the ball in the midfield. Kobiashvili unleashed a fierce left-footed shot into the roof of the net from 18 meters.
Delgado, who replaced Julio Rossi in the 65th minute, scored the equalizer 17 minutes later, curling a free-kick into the top corner.
