Rush not in running for Wales job
LONDON, England -- Former Wales and Liverpool striker Ian Rush has ruled himself out of succeeding Mark Hughes as manager of Wales.
Rush was only appointed manager of English side Chester City in August but the Football Association of Wales contacted the club about him taking over the national job.
"It's been very flattering for me to be linked with the Welsh job since Mark Hughes left," said Rush.
"But having just started at Chester, I found myself in a very difficult position. That's why I made my decision to stay and try to establish my managerial credentials at Chester first."
Rush, 43, began his playing career at Chester in the late 1970s before moving to Liverpool where he won five league titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups and the 1984 European Cup.
Since becoming Chester manager, his team have played 10 unbeaten matches, rising from bottom to 14th after promotion from the Conference League at the end of last season.
He played 73 times for Wales and is their record scorer with 28 goals.
Hughes, a playing contempory of Rush's, was Wales manager from 1999 until last month when he took over as manager of English Premier League club Blackburn.
