Wenger charged over 'cheat' remark
LONDON, England -- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged with improper conduct over his reported comment about Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Wenger was alleged to have called United's Dutch striker a cheat following last month's stormy 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford, but the French manager denied the accusation.
Both clubs have been summoned to a meeting by the English FA "to avoid any repeat of the adverse publicity that surrounded the game," an FA statement said on Monday.
The FA also said there would be "no formal disciplinary action on any other matters related to the match."
Wenger was investigated by the FA about his comments on the referee for the game, Mike Riley, who gave United a hotly disputed penalty.
The FA also looked into reports that United manager Alex Ferguson was pelted with food in the tunnel after the game.
The match was marred by accusations of vicious fouls, cheating and refereeing mistakes and Wenger was furious over Van Nistelrooy's knee-high tackle on Ashley Cole.
"We know how Ruud van Nistelrooy behaves," Wenger was reported as saying. "He can only cheat people. We know him very well."
The referee took no action against Van Nistelrooy. But the FA, acting on video evidence, later suspended him for three matches for "serious foul play."
The FA said Wenger had until November 18 to respond to the misconduct charge.
