BUCHAREST, Romania -- Suspended former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu is training with Romania's national team in Armenia ahead of a World Cup qualifier.

Mutu is serving a seven-month worldwide ban and cannot play any matches, but Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu invited him to join his former teammates ahead of the Armenia qualifier.

Mutu, who was Romania's captain this season, was included in the team's tactical meetings.

He later joined the 22-strong squad in Romania's official training session at the Republican Stadium in Yerevan, sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor reported.

Aside from Mutu, Iordanescu cannot count on 10 other top players for Wednesday's qualifier due to injuries and suspensions.

Romania top the group with nine points and a better goal difference than second-placed Finland. The Netherlands are third with seven points.
