BUCHAREST, Romania -- Anghel Iordanescu has resigned as Romania coach after coming under intense criticism for his side's World Cup draw in Armenia on Wednesday.
Romania, depleted by injuries and suspensions, lost top spot in Group One after a 1-1 draw which handed Armenia their first point in five matches.
"I resign as Romania coach after the result in Yerevan. I assume complete responsibility for the poor performance," said Iordanescu.
Iordanescu has resigned three times in his two stints as national coach but he changed his mind a few days after and returned each time.
The 54-year-old army general led Romania to successive World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998 but his second tenure was less successful with the Balkan country failing to qualify for the Euro 2004 finals.
Romanian media had repeatedly criticised Iordanescu for taking up politics and running for the ruling leftist Social Democrat Party in this month's general polls.
