GLASGOW, Scotland -- Rangers returned to the top of the Scottish Premier League with an impressive 3-0 win over struggling Dundee, then learnt that would face old firm rivals Celtic in the third round of the Scottish Cup.
Holders Celtic will be seeking to avenge two defeats at the hands of Rangers this season, when the teams clash at Celtic Park on the weekend of January 8/9.
Celtic can overhaul their neighbors in the league and recapture top spot if they win at Dunfermline on Sunday.
Rangers never looked back after scoring twice in the first five minutes against Dundee.
Nacho Novo netted from the penalty spot after being brought down in the area by former team mate Jonay Hernandez after 90 seconds.
Two minutes later Novo's cross was controlled by Dado Prso, who fired past Derek Soutar.
Bob Malcolm wrapped up the victory with a rare goal in the 50th minute.
Rangers manager Alex McLeish was disappointed with the cup draw.
He said: "I can't believe it, especially since we are playing away. Six games against Celtic in a season, I'm sure the authorities will be delighted.
"It is the toughest tie of the lot for us. We have struggled at Parkhead in recent games and we will need to try and improve that record in the next few months."
Comfortable win
Dundee United enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Kilmarnock with a brace from Jim McIntyre, either side of a Barry Robson strike direct from a corner, giving under-pressure boss Ian McCall some relief.
Fourth-placed Hibernian won 2-1 at home to third-placed Aberdeen. Derek Riordan put Hibs ahead in the first-half with Darren Mackie equalizing for the Dons.
But just before the break the visitors were reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper David Preece was sent off for handling outside his box. Stephen Glass made the extra man count when he scored the winner in the second half.
Motherwell grabbed all three points at home to Livingston with goals from Phil O'Donnell and Richie Foran.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hearts fought out a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie. Hearts' Andy Webster was sent off in the first half but they took the lead from the penalty spot through Paul Hartley.
Caley then equalized through Spanish striker Juanjo, also from a penalty.
As well as the old firm clash, there are two other all Premier League meetings in the third round of the Cup.
Hibernian are at home to Dundee and Kilmarnock entertain Motherwell.
Last season's beaten finalists Dunfermline will tackle either Huntly or East Fife on the East End Park plastic.
