(CNN) -- NASA has released a new image from the Mars rover Spirit -- the first image transmitted from the rover since it began malfunctioning a week ago.

The image was taken and returned to Earth Wednesday, and released by NASA Thursday.

It shows the rover using an instrument called the Moessbauer spectrometer which is mounted on its robotic arm.

Spirit was in the process of pressing the instrument up against a rock called Adirondack to measure its mineral content when it began to experience communication problems.

NASA says its engineers are working to restore Spirit to working order.

In the meantime, Spirit's twin, Opportunity, which landed Sunday on the other side of Mars, may roll off its lander to begin its scientific mission as early as this weekend.
