NAME: Arnold Schwarzenegger
BORN: July 30, 1947
BIRTHPLACE: Small town outside Graz, Austria
(CNN) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to fame, fortune and power began when he picked up his first barbell at age 13.
By age 20, a year after being named Mr. Europe, he won the title of Mr. Universe -- the first of his 13 major bodybuilding accolades.
After bodybuilding, it was on to Hollywood. Schwarzenegger starred in such films as "Pumping Iron" and the "Conan" and "Terminator" franchises.
A Republican, Schwarzenegger entered the political spotlight August 6, 2003. Amid the drive to recall California Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger, a naturalized U.S. citizen, announced during a taping of NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that he would run for governor.
Schwarzenegger was elected governor October 7, 2003, when voters ousted Davis and chose the actor and former bodybuilder over 134 other candidates on the ballot.
He and wife Maria Shriver, a niece of President John F. Kennedy, have four children: Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher.
