Web sites offer storm survival tips
(CNN) -- As Hurricane Frances bears down on southeastern Florida, a number of Web sites offer up-to-date information, links to relief agencies and advice on how to prepare.
MyFlorida.com,
the state government Web site, offers the latest official announcements, status updates, and links to other online resources.
Floridadisaster.org is the home page of the state's emergency management division, and includes telephone numbers of relief organizations and links that allow users to donate or volunteer to relief efforts.
One of the first relief organizations to arrive at the scene of a disaster is the American Red Cross. The organization's Web site includes tips for hurricane preparedness and a list of Florida chapters. There is also a link for donations -- the group estimates that it spent $50 million on relief efforts after Hurricane Charley.
The U.S. government's National Hurricane Center offers updates on active storms every three hours, at 2, 5, 8 and 11 a.m. and p.m. The site also includes projected paths and current satellite and radar images.
Evacuations can strain highway capacity and drivers' nerves. A real-time road tracker from the state's emergency management division gives information on congestion, closures, accidents and lane reversals.
The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, a non-profit organization, has safety tips to help owners of damaged homes stay safe and protect against further damage.
