BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Chinese agricultural officials have confirmed that the H5N1 strain of bird flu -- the more deadly variety -- has spread to Anhui Province in Eastern China.

But the officials said Thursday no human infections have been found in China from the flu, which has killed at least 14 people in Asia.

China's Ministry of Agriculture is also investigating several suspected cases of avian influenza among poultry in eastern Jiangxi province, making it the 13th province with confirmed or suspected bird flu cases.

Officials at the Agriculture Ministry said reported that 56,000 birds have been infected, and 49,000 have died, while about 1.2 million birds -- including chickens, ducks and geese -- have been destroyed to try to contain the outbreaks.

While outbreaks have been relatively widespread across the country -- 13 out of 31 provinces affected -- officials said the situation was more serious in southern China.

Nearly 50 million poultry have been destroyed in response to the outbreak, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
