Pakistan ambush: 11 reported dead
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Gunmen riding in several civilian vehicles opened fire on a Pakistani military checkpoint near the Afghan border, prompting paramilitary soldiers to return fire, killing 11 and wounding six others, according to a military spokesman.
The statement did not say if any Pakistani soldiers were injured or killed in the attack.
The incident happened Saturday near Wana, in southern Waziristan, and local officials have detained 16 people for questioning in connection with the shooting, Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said.
It is not clear if the assailants were part of an organized terror network, Sultan added.
On Tuesday, Pakistani forces launched a raid in the same area, arresting 25 people as part of a major operation against al Qaeda and Taliban forces in the Wana area, where al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar are believed to be hiding. (Full story)
