COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Authorities in Sri Lanka say a suspected female suicide bomber detonated explosives at a police station in the capital Colombo, killing herself and four officers.

The attack inside the station in central Colombo wounded nine others, according to police and hospital officials.

Wednesday's blast took place inside a high security zone that houses diplomatic missions and the prime minister's residence.

Six police were among the nine wounded; the other three were civilians, according to the national hospital director.

The bomber had been detained by police for suspicious behavior before the explosion inside the station, police said.

It was not clear what type of explosive she used in the attack. Her motive was also not clear, although police suspect she is a Tamil Tiger rebel.

Sri Lanka's government forces are observing a cease-fire with Tamil Tiger rebels, trying to restart a stalled peace process.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
