SRINAGAR, Indian-administered Kashmir (CNN) -- A top commander of the Kashmiri extremist group Hizbul Mujahideen was killed along with two other militants in an operation launched by the Indian Army, police sources told CNN.
The incident occurred in the village of Chaman Pathri, 54 km south of the winter capital Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir, the sources said, adding that the army was acting on specific information and had cordoned off the village late Sunday.
In similar operation, the Border Security Force (BSF), an Indian paramilitary unit, killed three militants Tuesday in Saller, 90 km south of Srinagar.
Police said the BSF received information of the militants' presence in the village and launched a search operation. They reported a heavy exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces, also resulting in the death of two civilians.
Hizbul Mujahideen seeks to bring the disputed Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir into Pakistan.
