UK court holds bomb suspect
LONDON, England -- A 17-year-old Briton arrested by UK anti-terrorism police has been remanded in custody for a week after appearing in court on conspiracy charges.
The suspect, who cannot be identified because of his age, appeared Wednesday at Bow Street Magistrate's Court, which was sitting as a youth court.
He was charged with conspiring to cause "an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property" and ordered to appear at the same court on April 14.
Asked whether he understood, the suspect -- who was unshaven and dressed in a black sweatshirt and black jogging trousers -- replied: "Yes," the UK Press Association reported.
The suspect is one of nine people arrested in raids last week by anti-terrorism police.
British police arrested eight men -- ages 17 to 32 -- in and around London on March 30.
Police also found a half-ton of ammonium nitrate -- a fertilizer that can be used to make a powerful explosive -- in a self-storage locker.
A ninth man was arrested south of London two days later.
