Probe into Moscow dorm blast
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russian police are investigating an explosion at a Moscow dormitory that wounded 19 people, police sources told Russia's Interfax news agency.
Originally thought to have been caused by a gas leak within the building, police said Monday that an explosive device containing under 500 grams (17 ounces) of a TNT-like substance was detonated at an entrance to the dorm, Interfax reported.
The explosion blew out about 200 windows in the dormitory and nearby buildings but there wasn't any major structural damage.
Of the 19 wounded, nine remain hospitalized, including a one-year-old baby listed in severe condition.
Half of the eight-story dormitory is being used to house Vietnamese nationals, roughly 700 people.
Most Russian homes use natural gas for cooking. Scores of people are killed each year from blasts caused by gas leaks.
