The security forces went to a house in the eastern part of the Saudi capital after receiving a tip that fugitives were there, Saudi officials said.

Officials said explosives and plans for terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia were found in the house.

Authorities identified the suspect as Khalid Farraj. A senior official with the Ministry of the Interior said Farraj was not on the country's list of 24 wanted militants.

In a written statement, the ministry said intelligence indicated the suspect was holed up in a building with weapons and explosives, and special security forces in Riyadh set out to apprehend him and seize the weapons Thursday morning.

When the security force members entered the house -- located between the Assada and Fayha'a neighborhoods -- they found Farraj with his father and several other men, the statement said.

A gunfight broke out, resulting in the deaths of the father and five members of the security forces, the statement said. Two other security members were wounded, and the suspect was taken into custody, .

The official said several other gunmen in the house managed to escape.

CNN's Caroline Faraj in Amman, Jordan, and Ayman Mohyeldin in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, contributed to this report.
