Israeli troops battle Palestinians near Gaza City
GAZA CITY (CNN) -- Israeli soldiers targeting "the terrorist infrastructure" on the outskirts of Gaza City fought with Palestinians on Wednesday morning, wounding or killing 17 armed Palestinians, Israeli military sources said.
Palestinian medical sources said at least 10 people were killed -- including a Palestinian police officer, a Hamas fighter, a Palestinian taxi driver and two Palestinian civilians -- and 17 others were wounded in the fighting.
The Israeli military sources said Israeli troops were operating on the Karni Netzarine Road against "the terrorist infrastructure." The IDF source said 130 mortar rockets had been fired from that area toward the Israeli border in the last two months.
As the Israeli tanks rolled in early Wednesday they were attacked by armed groups with anti-tank missiles, the IDF sources said. Israeli troops returned fire.
An IDF source said Israeli troops found an arms cache that included four explosive devices, four hand grenades and a Kalashnikov rifle.
