Bosnian Serb turns himself in to Hague
(CNN) -- A Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect wanted in connection with the notorious Srebrenica massacre 10 years ago surrendered Thursday to the war crimes tribunal at The Hague, the tribunal announced.
Vujadin Popovic had been at large since an October 2002 indictment by the tribunal, which has been presiding over war crimes proceedings stemming from the wars in the Balkans in the previous decade.
The indictment says Popovic was "a lieutenant colonel and assistant commander for security on the staff" of the Bosnian Serb Army's Drina Corps, and that "he was present and on duty in the Drina Corps zone of responsibility from July 11 to August 31, 1995. That zone includes Srebrenica, Potocari, Bratunac and Zvornik.
"It is alleged that Vujadin Popovic, by virtue of his position as assistant commander of security for the Drina Corps, had responsibility for dealing with Bosnian Muslim prisoners from Srebrenica from 11 July 1995 until 1 November 1995.
"In the several days following the attack on Srebrenica, the VRS (Bosnian Serb Army) forces captured, detained, summarily executed, and buried over 7,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys from the Srebrenica enclave, and forcibly transferred the Bosnian Muslim women and children out of the enclave."
Popovic is accused of planning, instigating, preparing, executing or aiding and abetting the acts.
The indictment charges Popovic with one count of genocide, four counts of crimes against humanity, and one count of violations of the laws of war.
