Steiner appointed to Red Bull post
LONDON, England -- Red Bull have hired former Jaguar Racing managing director Guenther Steiner as their new technical director.
At the same time the team have cancelled a planned launch in Spain on February 7 and said they would unveil their new car at the start of the season in Australia in March instead.
Italian Steiner, 39, replaces Briton Dave Pitchforth -- the man who took over from him at Jaguar two years ago and was himself pushed aside last week.
Steiner was most recently technical director of Opel Motorsport.
Austrian energy drink billionaire Deitrich Mateschitz bought the Jaguar team from Ford in November and renamed it Red Bull.
Red Bull said the decision to scrap the launch was the first joint decision taken by their new management team of Steiner and sporting director Christian Horner, who has replaced team boss Tony Purnell.
"We are in a phase of restructuring and want to take advantage of every available day to prepare for our first year," Horner said in a statement.
"We are concentrating all our efforts on creating the conditions we need for our young team to get off to an optimal start this season."
Briton David Coulthard is the team's only confirmed driver, though both Austrian Christian Klien and Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi are under contract.
The season starts in Melbourne on March 6.
