Smith and Kemp flay England attack
EAST LONDON, South Africa -- Graeme Smith scored his second hundred in three matches and Justin Kemp hammered a spectacular 80 off 50 balls as South Africa amassed 311 for seven on their way to a seven-run victory over England in the fifth one-day international in East London.
Kevin Pieterson made the fastest one-day century by an England player as they responded with 304 for eight,
He reached three figures in 65 balls, with a six off the final delivery of the innings
South Africa's win gave them a 3-1 lead in the seven-match series.
Smith, who made his maiden one-day hundred in the third match of the series, batted through the 50 overs to end on 115 not out and put on a lightning 117 with the big-hitting Kemp.
The right-handed Kemp delighted the crowd with seven massive sixes and four fours. It was his best score in 19 one-dayers. He had hit 57 off 36 balls in the previous match.
It was the highest one-day international score made at East London.
Darren Gough finished with a hat-trick of sorts when he removed Kemp in the 49th over, bowled Mark Boucher for a golden duck and removed the bails to run Shaun Pollock out next ball.
Gough took three for 52 while Matthew Hoggard bowled nine overs for 74 without taking a wicket.
Earlier Smith put on 90 for the second wicket with Jacques Kallis (49) after the home side opted to bat.
Kallis knocked Kabir Ali out of the attack with five fours off his first over but Ali returned to have Kallis caught at square leg before also dismissing Herschelle Gibbs cheaply.
England were still in touch as they reached 214 for four with 10 overs remaining, needing to score at 10 an over to win and with fast bowler Shaun Pollock bowled out.
But Vikram Solanki was run out after a mix-up with Pietersen and Kallis removed Paul Collingwood lbw and yorked Ashley Giles to expose the tail with 57 still needed off last five overs.
Pietersen, batting with sore hamstring, needed to produce a miracle finish to match Kemp's and Ali chipped in with a straight six off Kallis.
They needed 36 off three overs but they failed to find a boundary off the next two, leaving them 23 to win off the last.
Ali was then run out and Pietersen had to settle for makiing his second century of the series, having hit four sixes and seven fours in all.
The start was delayed by an hour following overnight rain, with the infield covered in sand and the boundaries brought in to make play possible.
