LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Five nations have submitted bids to host the 2009 world swimming championships, the sport's global governing body said on Tuesday.
The international swimming federation, FINA, said Athens, Rome, Moscow, Dubai, and the United Arab Emirates, all had come forward.
Japan also is bidding, but has yet to confirm which city would host the championships, FINA said.
FINA will pick the host at a meeting on July 16, ahead of the upcoming world championships in Montreal.
Last week, FINA handed the 2005 worlds back to Montreal, less than a month after they were stripped from the Canadian city because of budget problems.
FINA said the July 17-31 championships could go ahead because Montreal organizers had solved their financial problems and that many national teams already had made travel and hotel bookings.
