British sports chiefs are euphoric
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSLONDON, England (CNN) -- British sports chiefs were euphoric after London was chosen to stage the 2012 Olympic Games. Rugby Football Union president Malcolm Phillips said: "The RFU would like to congratulate Lord Coe and the 2012 bid team on securing the Olympics for London. "Britain loves its sport and is very capable of delivering world class events and I am sure that the 2012 Olympics will be no exception." Scottish Rugby's director of corporate affairs Mike Keohane said: "We are delighted. This is great news for sport in the UK as a whole and Scottish Rugby sincerely hopes that rugby sevens will play a part in the 2012 Games." There was enthusiasm in Wales too, for the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will stage eight matches during the Olympic football tournament. Paul Sergeant, the stadium's chief executive, said: "After watching London's incredible presentation this morning, I was in no doubt that London would pull it off. "It was a fantastic presentation, delivered brilliantly by Lord Coe and his team, and showed a huge amount of heart and passion, which is what the Olympics are all about. "We at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, are thrilled that we will play a part in the staging of the Olympics and I am sure everyone in Wales will echo that. "We backed the bid and and now we will back its total success." Welsh Rugby Union chief executive David Moffatt also paid tribute to the "fantastic efforts" of Lord Coe's team. He added: "British sport owes you and your team a huge debt of gratitude and it is now down to everyone involved in sport in the UK to get behind London and ensure that the 2012 Games are the greatest of all time."
