Lafeber and Clark lead in Scotland
![]() Swing easy. Clark powered into contention with a briilliant 65 at Loch Lomond. LOCH LOMOND, Scotland -- The big names of the European Tour flexed their muscles but it was overnight leader Maarten Lafeber and South Africa's Tim Clark who led after the third round of the Scottish Open. Lafeber finished at 15-under 198, level with Clark, who holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the par-three 17th on his way to a 65 on Saturday. But South Africa's Ernie Els, Ryder Cup pair Darren Clarke and Colin Montgomerie and Adam Scott of Australia all forced their way into the picture at Loch Lomond. Big-hitting Argentine Angel Cabrera birdied the last for a 68 to share third place at 14 under with Britain's Alastair Forsyth, who picked up shots at two of the last four holes for a 67. A further two strokes back in a three-way share of fifth were Clarke (69), Scott (64) and Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee (66). World number seven Scott, back at Loch Lomond after a two-year absence, produced the best round of the day after reeling off eight birdies and a solitary bogey on 14. "I am very happy with how I played today," Scott told reporters. "But I had to shoot at least 64 to have a chance." Seven-times European number one Montgomerie returned a 66 for a 54-hole total of 204 but rued his poor putting over the closing holes. "I just didn't hit the ball hard enough -- the last four putts were all short," said the 42-year-old Scot. "I played lovely today but I won't be able to make it interesting tomorrow. This course is playing very easy and I will probably be eight or nine behind going into the final round. "I'm just going to gain as many world ranking points as I can. That's why I'm here." Level with Montgomerie was world number three Ernie Els, who had got to 12 under before pulling his tee shot into water at the last on his way to a double-bogey six and a 67. "I missed a lot of putts out there," said a disgruntled Els, bidding this week for an unprecedented third Scottish Open title. "The whole week I haven't made a putt longer than 10 feet. After a while, it gets to you." Reuters contributed to this report.
