Langer and duo earn Open reprieves
![]() Langer is set for his 27th Open appearance after a string of withdrawals. ST ANDREWS, Scotland -- Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, Fredrik Jacobson and Brian Davis won late reprieves to play in the 134th British Open on Monday after three players pulled out with injury. German Langer, who steered Europe to a record win over the USA last September, booked his 27th Open appearance after Japan's Shingo Katayama withdrew. The 51-year-old American Jay Haas also scratched from the tournament, which starts on Thursday at St Andrews, paving the way for Swede Jacobson to play. Jacobson is the next best non-exempt player on the world rankings. Briton David Howell, a member of Langer's team in Michigan last year, has been forced out through injury too. He was also sidelined from the U.S. Open in June with a muscle strain. Fellow Englishman Davis takes his place. Langer, 47, has a strong record in the event, finishing second in 1984 here to Seve Ballesteros and runner-up to American Bill Rogers 1981 at Sandwich. He has also finished third four times. Open officials had no further details on the injuries.
