CAS uphold 18-month ban on Knauss
![]() The CAS felt that the 18-month ban imposed on Knauss was fair LONDON, England -- The Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld an 18-month ban on Austrian skier Hans Knauss for testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone. The independent Lausanne-based body dimissed an appeal to reduce the ban, ruling Knauss could not race again until May 26 next year. Knauss was provisionally suspended in January after a positive test for nandrolone after a race in Lake Louise, Canada. He was banned for 18 months by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in March. The 34-year-old, giant slalom silver medallist at the 2003 world championships and one of Austria's most experienced racers, had faced a potential two-year suspension. The CAS said although the consumption by Knauss of nutritional supplements had been the most likely cause of nandrolone in his urine, the 18-month ban imposed by FIS had been "fair and reasonable considering the risk taken by Knauss by using nutritional supplements, risk about which he was warned".
