Federer ducks Canada title defense
BASEL, Switzerland -- Roger Federer will not play in next month's Masters Series hard court event in Montreal because of a lingering foot injury, his website said Friday. "Regrettably, I have to inform you that I will not participate in the Rogers Cup in Montreal," read a statement from the world number 1 player's website. "I have been suffering from pain in my feet for the past six months. An MRI was performed after Wimbledon and the doctors advised me to rest for four full weeks." He added: "As this period collides with the preparation for Montreal and the tournament itself, I had to take this decision in order to ensure full recovery." Federer has not played since defeating Andy Roddick for the second straight year to complete a Wimbledon title hattrick. He had planned to return after five weeks away to defend his title in Canada, where he beat Roddick in a Toronto final last summer. Federer said he is hoping to be fit for the Cincinnati Masters which begins on August 15, the day after the Montreal final. "Not being able to compete and trying to defend my title from Toronto does hurt. After all, it is my birthday the first day of the tournament and I also like the province of Quebec a lot. But I am certainly looking forward to playing in Toronto next year." His statement concluded: "Cincinnati is still on the plan."
