Roddick leads U.S. Davis Cup side
![]() Roddick will lead the U.S. bid to stay in the World Group NEW YORK -- Andy Roddick will spearhead the U.S. Davis Cup team in the World Group playoff tie against Belgium. American captain Patrick McEnroe also named James Blake, Robby Ginepri and doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan on Wednesday for the tie at Leuven, Belgium, starting on September 23. McEnroe said he expected Roddick to take one of the singles berths and would choose between Blake and Ginepri for the other spot after evaluating their practice on the indoor clay surface. Roddick, who has a 15-6 Cup singles record, was committed to playing in the playoff despite his disappointing U.S. Open exit against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. "I think it will be a positive for him," McEnroe said. "Something to shoot for." McEnroe said he had told both Blake and Ginepri to be prepared to play. "They're certainly both playing well enough to warrant a spot. It's a nice luxury to have," the captain said. "For me, this is the start of 2006, trying to win the Davis Cup." The United States have to play themselves back into the World Group after suffering a 3-2 home defeat in the first round against Croatia. Belgium qualified for the playoff with a 3-2 victory over Serbia and Montenegro. The Americans hold a 3-0 edge against Belgium, taking a 4-1 victory in the 1998 quarter-final in their last meeting.
