Ferrero and Moya through in China
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBEIJING, China -- Spanish former world number ones Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya have negotiated tricky first round matches at the China Open. Sixth seed Ferrero was made to work hard for a 4-6 6-3 7-5 win over South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik, blowing four match points before finally clinching his last 16 place. Moya, the eighth seed, eased past Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan with an efficient 7-6 6-3 victory to maintain his mastery over Asia's top player. Moya's close friend Rafael Nadal is seeded number one and begins his quest for a 10th title of the year against Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo on Tuesday. Moya, Nadal and Ferrero all made early exits at the U.S. Open before arriving in Beijing for the $1.1 million tournament. Ferrero, a first round loser in New York, struggled for consistency against Lee but advanced when the Korean hit an ill-advised drive volley long after over two hours. Paradorn has now failed to beat Moya in four meetings and was completely deflated after surrendering his serve at 3-3 in the second. "It was a close match and then three minutes later it was over," said Moya. "I need to keep playing at this level. Sooner or later I know I'm going to play well again." Moya, whose world ranking has slipped to 33, faces Stefan Koubek in the second round after the Austrian saw off Switzerland's Ivo Heuberger 6-3 7-6. In other matches, Dutchman Peter Wessels beat Australia's Wayne Arthurs 7-6 6-4 while Russian Dmitri Tursunov brushed aside Germany Lars Burgsmueller 6-3 6-4 to set up a meeting with Ferrero.
