White is chosen to face World XI

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Leg spinner Cameron White, rushed into the Australia squad after an injury to Brad Hogg, has been named in the team for the opening one-day match against the World XI in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The Victoria captain, who impressed with bat and ball in his state's 12-run loss to the World XI on Sunday, was added to Australia's squad on Monday when Hogg was sent home for surgery on a knee injury.

Fast bowler Stuart Clark, who replaced the injured Shaun Tait, was left out of the 12-man squad with left arm fast bowler Nathan Bracken being preferred instead.

Simon Katich will open with wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.

Chris Gayle and Makhaya Ntini have been left out of the World XI team.

Skipper Shaun Pollock, faced with the difficult task of accommodating some of the world's best 14 cricketers in a 12-man team, said that West Indian Gayle and South African Ntini would not play and he would decide on the super sub on the day of the game.

So formidable is the World XI that the first nine batsmen in the order have scored Test centuries and England's Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff may be forced to bat as low as number seven.

Selector Sunil Gavaskar confirmed that Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara will open the batting with India's Virender Sehwag.

They are likely to be followed by Indian Rahul Dravid, South African Jacques Kallis, West Indian champion Brian Lara and England's Kevin Pietersen ahead of Flintoff

The match will be played under the retractable roof of Docklands Stadium, as rain is forecast for much of Wednesday.

Australian Simon Taufel and Pakistan's Aleem Dar will be the umpires for the opening game and South African Rudi Koertzen is expected to have a heavy workload as third umpire.

There will be more umpiring referrals because of increased use of video technology during the ICC series.
