![]() Turgeon has been forced to call it a day after battling a back injury MONTREAL, Canada -- Canadian skier Melanie Turgeon, the 2003 world downhill champion, has announced her retirement due to consistent back pain. Turgeon, who won five medals at the junior world championships in 1994, has suffered from back problems since January 2004. Since then she has spent most of her time trying to correct slipped discs and regain her fitness. The 28-year-old from Quebec decided to call it a day ahead of the coming season which begins in just over two weeks time at Solden in Austria. Turgeon took eight podium spots in skiing's World Cup after 1999, and won one event, the super-G at Innsbruck, in 2000.
