Sun has protested her innocence after testing positive for a banned steroid

BEIJING, China -- Sun Yingjie has been stripped of her silver medal in the women's 10,000m at the Chinese National Games after a positive drugs test.

"Sun tested positive for the banned agent androsterone in doping tests conducted after the women's 10,000m final on Monday night," said a spokesman.

Sun and her coach said they were innocent, in the first doping case reported at the Games in Nanjing.

"The shock is too great. I can't understand or believe this," Sun said. "Now my only hope is for the B sample to be normal."

Her coach Wang Dexian said Sun could have drunk tainted water and added someone could have gone into her hotel room and tampered with her drinks.

"We feel we've been wronged," Wang said. "We need to file a complaint and this case must be investigated."

The day before finishing second in the 10,000 meters, Sun passed a doping test after winning the Beijing international marathon.

Chinese athletics officials promised to punish Sun and others involved if the results were confirmed by a positive test on the B sample.

Sun is China's leading distance runner and the holder of a world championship bronze medal.
