Petacchi to choose Tour over Giro
![]() Sprinter Petacchi is unhappy with the route for the 2006 Giro d'Italia MILAN, Italy -- Sprinter Alessandro Petacchi could return to the Tour de France next year because the Giro d'Italia route has left him with few victory opportunities. Petacchi, who will leads the new Milram team next season alongside Erik Zabel, prefers the flatter stages where he regularly battles with the top fastmen. However, next year's Giro will have only five flat stages, prompting the 31-year-old Italian to return to the Tour, a race he missed this year. "The Giro will be really difficult for me, there are only five stages for the sprinters so I'm going to have a look at the race course for the Tour de France instead. "Now, I'm looking to change my race programme for next season and perhaps replace the Giro with the Tour," added Petacchi, who won four stages in this year's Giro and then four in the Tour of Spain in September. Petacchi looked nonchalant at the race presentation on Saturday, in contrast to climbing compatriots Gilberto Simoni, Danilo Di Luca and Damiano Cunego. Discovery Channel's Paolo Savoldelli is the reigning Giro champion, and is likely to start among the favorites at next year's 89th edition which runs from May 6-28.
