Wilkinson undergoes groin surgery
![]() Wilkinson has not played for England since winning them the World Cup LONDON, England -- England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson will be out of action for up to a month after undergoing groin surgery. "He damaged his groin last week. The injury is more commonly known as a sportsman's hernia," said his club Newcastle's director of rugby Rob Andrew. "We are told it's a fairly routine operation and we hope to have him back for the Premiership game against Leeds on December 27," added Andrew. "It's yet another unfortunate blow to have Jonny out again with injury, but there's no point dwelling on it, you just have to deal with what's thrown at you." The injury is the latest in a long line of disappointments to befall Wilkinson since he kicked the drop goal that secured the 2003 World Cup - his last appearance in an England shirt. Neck, shoulder, arm and knee troubles, as well as an inflamed appendix, have kept him out of contention for an England recall, although he did appear for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand before that adventure too was cut short through injury. Earlier this week, Wilkinson said in an interview to mark the second anniversary of the World Cup win that he had been reduced to tears of frustration and suffered a panic attack by his continual setbacks. England play the last of their three November Tests against Samoa at Twickenham on Saturday.
